A large body of work on the definition, measurement, and analysis of urban poverty in India has just come into existence. The term ‘Indian urban poverty’ is defined and examined in this paper, along with its rising socioeconomic causes and dynamics through the study of available literature. The paper aims to find the answer to the questions – “why” many urban residents remain poor and what is known about existing policies aiming to reduce it in India. Along with a few proposals to minimize India’s urban poverty, specific conclusions addressing difficulties and ground-rooted issues of urban poverty reduction are discussed through this paper.
