Abstract

Han Kang’s novel The Vegetarian stands as a powerful exploration of societal norms, personal autonomy and the psychological complexities underlying the decision to adopt a vegetarian lifestyle. While vegetarianism is often viewed through the lens of dietary preference or ethical stance, The Vegetarian transcends simplistic categorizations to explore the profound psychological implications of adopting a plant-based diet. The chapter entitled, “Echoes of the Unconscious and Mindscapes of Transformation: Unearthing Ecopsychological Dynamics in Han Kang’s The Vegetarian” sheds light on the psychological landscape of vegetarianism as depicted in The Vegetarian. Drawing on ecopsychology, the study unravels the underlying themes, imagery and implications of Yeong Hye’s journey. By examining the novel’s portrayal of the human-nature relationship, societal pressures and individual identity, the research renders insight on the psychological processes at play in the decision to adopt a vegetarian lifestyle. This study aims to contribute to the scholarly discourse on vegetarianism, literature and psychology. By delving into the complexities of Yeong Hye’s transformation, the chapter provides insight into the psychological, cultural and environmental dimensions of vegetarianism as well as its broader implications for individual well-being and societal change. Through a close reading of key passages and thematic analysis, this research offers new insights into the psychological dimensions of The Vegetarian shedding light on the interplay between individual psyche and societal forces in shaping human behavior and identity.
