Abstract

This research paper investigates the relationship between alternative sexuality and male homophobia in the cityscape as represented in Sachin Kundalkar's novel Cobalt Blue. The study delves at the relationship between sex, sexuality, and the urban environment drawing on the theories of Henri Lefebvre and Yi-Fu Tuan, highlighting the importance of urbanization in shaping queer identities and experiences. The story concentrates around Tanay, a protagonist who navigates city’s covert gay subculture, engaging in casual meetings and exploring public places for sexual pleasure. The study examines the topics of space, transgression, and the creation of social and sexual emancipation in the urban context. It also emphasizes the growth of LGBT venues, such as Station Road, Chat Rooms, Tower Room, and vacant homes, establishing the city as a beacon of possibility for queer people.
