Abstract

This research paper explores the significance of Manipuri folktales in northeast India. Folktales are traditional narratives passed down through generations, serving as a means to convey moral, cultural, and historical concepts. In Manipur, folktales are known as Phunga wari or Chak-ngai wari, and they are deeply rooted in the natural environment and societal values. The paper categorizes Manipuri folktales into seven types, including animal tales, trickster tales, magic tales, and more. The paper emphasizes the cognitive, affective, and conative functions of folktales, as well as their sociological functions in enhancing social status and maintaining societal balance. Overall, this research sheds light on the cultural heritage and educational value of Manipuri folktales.
