Abstract

It is the celebration of ‘Indian Philosophers Day’ sponsored by the Indian Council of Philosophical Research. The topic is “Perspectives of Indian Logic: Source and Implication in Present Society”. When we talk about Indian Logic, customarily we refer to Nyaya philosophy. It discusses about inference alongwith other ways of knowing (pramana). Here we find classification of inference, logical forms of inference and then detailed discussion about fallacies of inference. I am not going to discuss Nyaya logic, which is there in the UG courses, but I shall make some observations before I go to the topic assigned to me. We make a distinction between formal logic and informal logic. Formal logic is concerned with the validity of arguments. Validity is on the basis of the support provided by premises to the conclusion. If the support of the premises to the conclusion if full, then the given argument is certain. It happens in case of deductive arguments.
