GENDER EQUALITY AND WOMEN’S RIGHT

Abstract

Every citizen has the right to live their life according to their wish without any discrimination. It can be achieved when all individuals are considered equal irrespective of caste, religion, language, colour, profession, status and sex. Gender equality refers to equal rights, responsibilities and opportunities for both women and men. It implies that the interests, needs and priorities of both women and men are taken into consideration, recognizing the diversity of different groups of women and men. Worldwide, women’s fundamental rights continue to be violated, and they face discrimination in access to education, work, social protection, inheritance, economic assets, productive resources, and participation in decision-making and society. Women spend two to ten times more on unpaid work than men, which is one of the main obstacles to economic and political empowerment. Gender equality in India is a fundamental human right and a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world. Gender equality in India is the goal, while gender neutrality and gender equities are the practices and ways of thinking that help achieve the goal. Gender parity is used to measure gender balance in a given situation that can help achieve gender equality but is not the aim. The status of women in India has been subject to many great changes over the past few millennia. In the modern India, Women have held high offices including that of the President, Prime Minister , Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Leader of the Opposition, Union Minister, Governors and Chief Ministers etc. Women rights under the Constitution of India mainly include equality, dignity and freedom from discrimination and India has various statues governing the rights of women.
