Abstract

Leadership is seen as a process by which one individual influences others toward the attainment of group or organisational goals. It is a social influence process, which involves voluntary action on the part of followers and it is always purposeful and goal-oriented. Leadership deals with influence and is not the same as management, which includes planning, organising, staffing, directing and controlling. Education for women has gradually gained momentum since the time our country had won her freedom. Literacy campaigns have indeed raised women's hopes and aspirations to achieve freedom from ignorance and economic dependence, particularly when these are oriented towards socio-economic development. Even the rural and the urban under-privileged women, though small in number but significant as a group, have now begun to articulate and act as a pressure group to demand justice and fairness in all dealings that concerns them most, whether it is in obtaining drinking water or access to health schemes or public distribution system or education or participation in employment-generation programmes of the government.
