Abstract

Teacher education is pivotal for ensuring high-quality instruction and fostering a progressive society. Historically, teachers in India have held esteemed positions, with formal teacher training initiatives emerging in the early 19th century. Pre-independence efforts included the establishment of Normal Schools and systematic training influenced by various commissions, such as the Wood's Despatch and the Sargent Report. Post-independence, numerous commissions like the Radhakrishnan Commission and the National Policy on Education (NPE) 1986 focused on improving both the quantity and quality of teacher education. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 emphasizes comprehensive reforms in teacher education to meet contemporary societal needs, addressing recruitment, training, and professional development. Challenges such as adapting to new curricula and integrating technology are noted, alongside the benefits of a holistic approach and enhanced teacher-student interactions. The evolution of teacher education in India underscores the necessity of continual professional development to maintain educational standards and societal advancement.
