Abstract

Waterlands, including wetlands, marshes, and coastal ecosystems, play a fundamental role in climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts. This abstract explores the importance of conserving waterlands as a crucial strategy for protecting the climate. Moreover, waterlands are vital for regulating the global carbon cycle and mitigating the release of methane (CH4), a potent greenhouse gas. While wetlands naturally emit methane, their conservation can minimize emissions by maintaining balanced hydrological conditions and preventing land-use changes that disrupt natural processes.
