Abstract

Climate change is already wreaking havoc in our surrounding. So, the need of the hour is sustainable development. The longer we continue to pursue unsustainability, the more severe will be the consequences and ultimately, we will leave an ailing environment for our future generations to live in. Therefore sustainable development has become a popular catchphrase in contemporary development discourse. But, despite its ever- growing significance, popularity and pervasiveness, the concept is still not very clear to many people. What sustainability is, what is its implications, how does it contribute to inter-and intra-generational equality etc. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the discourse on sustainable development by further explaining its determinants, principles and its three interconnected pillars more concisely so that decision makers can remain constantly mindful of their relationships and sensitive human behaviors and actions can be ensured for the sake of human development. This paper aims at clarifying the meaning, practices and the significance of sustainable development for better human thinking and actions, for better understanding of the inter connectedness of environment, economy and society, for making researchers, policy makers, academics, students, practitioners more informative about the paradigm of sustainable development for effective future decisions and for making everyone sustainable development aware, conscious, cultured and compliant.
