MIXED METHODS RESEARCH: A COMPREHENSIVE OVERVIEW FOR RESEARCHERS

Abstract

The fundamentals of mixed-method research involve integrating both quantitative and qualitative approaches to provide a comprehensive understanding of complex phenomena. Historically, research primarily relied on quantitative measures, but the emergence of qualitative research offered deeper insights into how individuals interact with their environments, which is crucial for fields like healthcare. The mixed-method approach, first applied in the social sciences in the 1970s, has since been incorporated into health education and research. Key objectives of this approach include triangulation, complementarity, development, initiation, and expansion. Essential considerations for mixed-method studies include theoretical drivers, timing, and points of integration. The Creswell and Clarke (2011) classification, which identifies triangulation, embedded, explanatory, and exploratory designs, is widely recognized for its utility and consistency. This paper explores the application, theory, variations, advantages, and challenges of each design, highlighting the significance of a thorough understanding of these methods for effective integration and interpretation. This mixed-method approach enriches educational research by offering diverse viewpoints on complex processes.
