Abstract

The evolution of educational assessment and evaluation has moved from traditional standardized testing, which primarily focused on memory and recall, to modern, multifaceted approaches that capture a broader range of student skills and competencies. As educational philosophies have progressed, there has been a growing emphasis on methods that assess students' abilities to apply knowledge, solve problems, and engage in critical thinking. Technological innovations such as digital assessments, adaptive learning systems, and AI-driven analytics are transforming the assessment landscape by offering personalized, real-time feedback and tailored learning experiences. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 further reinforces this shift by promoting competency-based assessments, continuous comprehensive evaluation, and the integration of modern technologies into the educational framework. This chapter explores the historical context of assessment practices in India, the vision of NEP 2020, and the emerging trends in pedagogical approaches and technological advancements. It also highlights the evolving role of educators in this dynamic landscape, emphasizing the need for continuous professional development and ethical considerations in the implementation of new assessment strategies.
