Abstract

This study explores the distinction between assessment and evaluation, focusing on their roles in enhancing student learning and development within the Indian education system. Assessment involves ongoing processes aimed at improving student learning through formative feedback and adjustments during the learning process. Evaluation, in contrast, is summative, used to judge the overall effectiveness of educational programs and assign grades or make decisions about student advancement. This study examines various assessment and evaluation methods employed in Indian secondary schools and investigates the impact of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 on these processes. The NEP 2020 emphasizes a shift towards formative assessments, the use of technology, and a new educational structure to enhance holistic development. The study identifies key challenges in implementing these reforms, including the need for comprehensive teacher training and resource allocation. By understanding the evolving landscape of educational assessment and evaluation, this research aims to highlight effective practices and areas for improvement.
