Abstract

The chapter provides an introduction to Design-Based Research (DBR) in education, highlighting its key principles, methods, and applications. DBR is an iterative approach that designs, tests, and refines interventions in real-world learning environments to improve educational outcomes. This chapter explores DBR's theoretical foundations, distinctiveness from traditional experimental research, and potential for addressing complex educational problems in education, highlighting its capacity to foster collaborative partnerships, drive innovation, and enhance student learning outcomes. It also outlines the various stages of the DBR process, from problem definition to implementation and evaluation, and presents examples of successful DBR projects in diverse educational settings. Additionally, the chapter discusses challenges and limitations of DBR, including scalability, sustainability, and the need for interdisciplinary collaboration. Finally, it examines future directions for DBR in education, including its potential to inform educational policy and practice, and its role in addressing pressing issues such as personalized learning, social-emotional learning, and diversity, equity, and inclusion.
