Abstract

India’s rural health system remains a cornerstone of national well-being, yet it faces persistent challenges in infrastructure, access, and awareness. A majority of rural populations continue to suffer due to limited healthcare facilities, shortage of skilled professionals, and socio-economic inequalities. This chapter explores the status of public health in rural regions, with a focus on key health indicators such as maternal and infant mortality, burden of communicable and lifestyle diseases, and the socio-cultural factors that influence health-seeking behavior.
