LEGAL AID AND ACCESS TO JUSTICE IN CRIMINAL LAW

Abstract

Legal aid in India has come a long way from its sporadic philanthropic traditions before its formal introduction to a systematized, state-sponsored framework. A turning point was the enactment of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987 which laid down a statutory provision for providing free legal services to those entitled to it including people from the marginalized communities, women, children and persons with disabilities. Under the Act legal services authorities are to be established at the national, state and district levels for the implementation and administration of legal aid. Their functions include promoting awareness of rights, conducting legal awareness programs, and providing legal representation in courts and tribunals.
