Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic triggered an unprecedented and multi-dimensional crisis for the Indian economy. While India had experienced a period of slowing growth in the years leading up to the pandemic, the global health crisis magnified pre-existing vulnerabilities, leading to a severe economic shock.1 This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the pandemic's impact, examining the immediate macroeconomic contraction, the disproportionate effects on key economic sectors and vulnerable populations, and the subsequent policy responses from the government and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The analysis reveals a historic GDP contraction, a sharp but temporary spike in unemployment, and a deep-rooted crisis of livelihood for the vast informal workforce.1 The report critically evaluates the fiscal stimulus packages and the RBI's monetary policy interventions, highlighting their efficacy and limitations.1 Finally, it explores the long-term structural changes that have been accelerated by the crisis, such as the rapid adoption of digitalization and the reshaping of global supply chains, which are now poised to drive India's post-pandemic recovery and long-term economic trajectory.
