Abstract

This Paper presents a comprehensive comparative analysis of India's position in the Human Development Index (HDI) from 2020 to 2024, situating its performance within a global context defined by profound post-pandemic uncertainty and geopolitical polarization. The study's primary objective is to move beyond simple rank-based comparisons, instead providing a nuanced examination of India's HDI value, its constituent components, and the underlying macroeconomic and policy-driven factors that have shaped its trajectory. The analysis is grounded in data from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and other institutional sources, while also critically engaging with the limitations of the HDI and the supplementary insights provided by indices such as the Inequality-adjusted HDI (IHDI) and the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI). Findings reveal that India has demonstrated a remarkable recovery from the global development reversal of 2020-2021, with its HDI value increasing and its global rank improving. This progress is attributed to a combination of a robust economic rebound and targeted government initiatives in health, education, and social welfare. However, the Paper highlights a critical paradox: despite significant progress, particularly in poverty reduction, deep-seated inequalities persist. The substantial loss in human development due to inequality remains a significant challenge, underscoring that the benefits of national progress are not distributed uniformly across the population. The Paper concludes that while India is on a clear path of human development, its advancement into the highest echelons of global development will hinge on its ability to address these persistent disparities.
