Abstract

The urbanised world of cities poses sustainability challenges at the present day. India has been on the road to massive urbanization from the end of the former century. The menaces are thus being faced by the citizens which not only poses a question on their health but also questions the sustainability issues of the society. There have been several facets of pollution as observed in most cities of India. Kolkata Metropolitan area has been no exception. The demons of air pollution, noise pollution, light pollution, waste management problems and visual pollution has been growing incessantly over here. The paper highlights on the issues of various types of pollution. This consisted of collection of secondary information on physical and socio-economic aspects of Kolkata Municipal Corporation. Secondary data was collected from the Census, Corporation Reports, reports and gazettes of WBPCB and other books, websites and journals relating to the area under study. All the pollution levels are far from being normal. Consuming the resources and access to clean environment is our fundamental right. But we must think of sustainable development so that the future world can enjoy earth for a longer period of time.
