Abstract

The present paper is a critical interpretation of pollution and its adverse effects on sustainable development. In a clean environment, the deteriorating ecosystem due to hostile human activities has been investigated. As a result of review of historical and contemporary literature on pollution and sustainable development and its various developmental stages and cause and effect relationships, it was found that man's fight against pollution has been going on for centuries and its current scenario is very extensive. The need for sustainable development concept has been felt due to environmental imbalance arising from dire conditions of pollution, which orient humans towards better consumption of resources. In recent years, the world has witnessed an increasing concern over the environmental impact of pollution on sustainable development. Pollution control is crucial for ensuring the well-being of the current and future generations. This research paper aims to explore the emerging issues in pollution types, effects, control and their implications for sustainable development. The current assessment recommends that humans can control their economic aspirations to control the incidence of pollution, thereby achieving a balanced ecosystem and an ambitious goal of "moving towards a pollution-free planet".
