PATH TO POWER: ADDRESSING VIOLENCE AND HARASSMENT AGAINST WOMEN FOR WOMEN EMPOWERMENT

Abstract

Violence against women is commonly acknowledged to be a global problem. Being an insidious violation of human rights which is often undetectable, but yet pervasive. The present thematic paper delves into the different aspects of the critical issue considering it a significant barrier to women’s empowerment. Further, it explores various societal forces related to this social problem and concerns related to the effectiveness of preventive measures. Highlighting its intricate relationship with women empowerment it discusses the various approaches or strategies for promoting women’s empowerment at the individual, community, and societal levels. It is concluded that tackling violence against women is a crucial prerequisite for women empowerment since empowered women's capacity for opposing societal conventions, stereotypes, and practices that enable violence leads to constructive social change. Further, combating violence against women remains crucial for attaining gender equity, sustainable development, and a more inclusive society. It is also a question of justice.
