Emphasizing the dynamic multimedia landscape of forthcoming digital library generations, it underscores the imperative role of digital librarians (DL) as an essential breed of specialized librarians. These professionals must adeptly oversee the digital library, undertaking specialized tasks encompassing extensive digitization, storage, access, digital knowledge mining, and digital reference services. Additionally, they play a pivotal role in managing electronic information services, coordinating searches, and overseeing archive accessibility. Positioned as custodians of the information superhighway, universal digital library, or global digital library, digital librarians function as symbiotic human-machine gurus. This article also illuminates the diverse roles and functions of DLs in information retrieval, content delivery, navigation, and browsing. It envisions the necessity for professional education and training tailored to equip digital librarians in effectively steering digital information systems. The discussion covers DL's interface functions, roles, skills, and competencies, spanning critical domains such as imaging technologies, optical character recognition, markup languages, cataloging, metadata, multimedia indexing, and database technology. Moreover, it addresses user interface design, programming, and web technology. In conclusion, these article strongly advocates for the creation of a digital libraries and steering the digital information system.Metrics
