Abstract

In recent years, there has been a growing emphasis on shifting from traditional teaching towards student-centred learning. This paradigm shift has encouraged moving power from the instructor to the learner, treating the learner as a co-creator in the teaching and learning process. Although, this shift also entails certain barriers/ challenges in its implementation. In this context my paper intends to provide a detailed overview of the concept of Learner centred teaching. The learner -centred approach in curriculum development acknowledges that students are active participants who construct knowledge through their experiences. Considering its relevance, the paper further tries to explore, incorporate and embrace the key and core principles/ characteristics of a Learner-Centred Design which offers a transformative approach to curriculum development which helps in creating a conducive classroom environment ensuring the all -round development of students as they are placed at the heart of the learning process. Furthermore, the paper also discusses the significance of the Learner Centred Psychological Principles prepared by American Psychological Association in 1997 which provides a sound foundational framework for incorporating the components of new design in the teaching learning process.
