Abstract

Problem-Based Learning (PBL) represents a constructivist teaching approach pivotal for 21st-century education. This chapter purports to elucidate PBL's core tenets, pedagogical framework, and implementation strategies, crucial for modern educational contexts. Originating at McMaster Medical University in the 1960s, PBL emerged from a need to invigorate medical education by immersing students in real-life problem-solving scenarios. Today, its applications span diverse subjects and educational levels, fostering collaborative, student-driven learning environments. PBL's salient features include its participant-directed nature, experiential learning emphasis, and reliance on authentic problems as catalysts for learning. Students engage in collaborative problem-solving, cultivating critical thinking, communication, and self-directed inquiry skills.
