Abstract

This chapter explores the issue of disability and discrimination in higher education, which, despite legal safeguards and growing awareness, still negatively affects students with disabilities. The chapter examines the various forms of discrimination that these students encounter, including physical barriers to access, insufficient support services, unfavorable attitudes, and barriers in the curriculum and assessment. The effects of discrimination on students' academic performance, involvement in campus life, mental health, and graduation rates are also covered. The chapter also explores the legal frameworks and guidelines that have been established to uphold the rights of people with disabilities and advance equality in education. Finally, the chapter offers suggestions for advancing inclusivity and equal opportunities in higher education, such as enhancing support services, promoting disability awareness and training, adopting inclusive curricula, and improving physical accessibility. This chapter seeks to contribute to ongoing initiatives to develop more inclusive and equitable learning environments for all students by offering a thorough understanding of the current state of disability and discrimination in higher education.
