DISABILITY AND HIGHER EDUCATION

Abstract

This paper discusses the different views and treatment of disability in society. It also talks about the problems faced by disabled students in higher education sector and the remedies that can be provided to help the students overcome the barriers. The disabled section of the society is often marginalized. Despite several rules and laws imposed by the government for aiding the disabled students, the lack of cooperation from the various sectors of the society, excludes the disabled person from several aspects of life and it makes them feel like a burden. Their problems are often over looked due to their lack of presence in the institutions. Higher education is a time when the students plan out their future and choose the path they want to follow for the rest of their lives. Steps should be taken by the institutions in accommodating the disabled students so that they can also move forward towards their dreams and aspirations.
